a call for change had raised a flag and made a voice as one the history of you and me but how far have we come? but how far have we come? hear the cries above the lies of justice being done. democracy for one and all, yet how far have we come? how far have we come? how far have we come? as as as far as our imaginings allow... between the days... between the days... between the days of then and now (repeat) let's barricade this here stockade before the morning sun come on people come circle round to see what we've become to see what we've become the road from Eureka show a battle fought and won and we keep the fires burning till we see the job is done till the job is done but how far have we come? as far as our imaginings allow... between the days... between the days... between the days of then and now (repeat) as a mighty wave with might and power we have come to the present hour we've got to take the chance and make a stance the time to act is now! between the days... between the days... between the days of then and now there's a call for change let's raise a flag and make a voice as one make history with you and me let's see what can be done see what can be done let's see what can be done and go where our imaginings allow... between the days between the days between the days of then and now (repeat) (repeat) outro between the days between the days of then and now (repeat)

about

“Growing up on folk festivals as a child, I have a large part in my heart for folk music and the community surrounding it. To me it represents the connections between people, mentors/peers, and the creation of a welcoming environment to share in music and fun.”
– Flora Carbo, 2022

In May 2020, Flora Carbo was to be presented at the SENA Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival, together with the Amersfoort World Jazz Festival, where I was to be an artist-in-residence featuring Origami. But... then things all changed.

In lieu of travelling, Flora and I spent a period of time talking over Zoom during lockdown. A commonality in both of our musical upbringings was exposure and participation in folk music, and so we used this as a starting point for swapping music and ideas to inspire one another: Sam Amidon, Joni Mitchell, Adrianne Lenker, Traffic, Terry Callier, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Traffic, Chad Morgan, Sisir Tanah, Harry James Angus and more.

In reflecting on this collaboration, Flora comments:
“In my saxophone and improvisation practice I have recently been drawing inspiration from singers and vocalists, particular in folk traditions, as there is an innate individuality to someone’s voice that I find very inspiring. There is something in the alto saxophone that is very voice-like, and working with two alto saxophones in one ensemble really highlights the individual voices of the players.”

Folk music is of the people, by the people, for the people. Singing and dancing are to be strongly encouraged!
