Now high-rise buildings are everywhere, I cannot find my primary and high schools, my home, the place I used to practice music every day and longtang where I used to play with my friends after school.”

The culture in Shanghai is a mixture of traditional Chinese and Western culture. Shanghai Memories used two popular Western influenced songs from the 1940s: The Evening Primrose and Shanghai Night. It was also inspired by the Shanghai local opera (Huju) and Shaoxing opera (Yueju) as well as percussion music from the city and elsewhere in China to indicate that Shanghai is a cultural melting pot.

Coming Together was supported by the Playking Foundation as part of Melbourne Recital Centre’s 10th anniversary commissions project and premiered in 2019 by the Australian Chinese Music Ensemble and Origami.

With our 2020 China tour cancelled, this album has provided a way to continue developing Origami’s partnership with Wang Zheng-Ting during the COVID-19 lockdown period. My first tour to China with Ting, along with his endless artistry, helped provide the inspiration for my contributions here.

Finally, Jasmine Flower, a popular Chinese folk song offers something of a lullaby to drift back into reminiscing.
